Strategic Infrastructure Planning Amid Shifting Optical Fiber Market Demand

For organizations deploying mission-critical network infrastructure, proactive planning is more necessary than ever

CoreTek is actively working with our partners to help customers navigate tightening market conditions as effectively as possible. Our focus is on maintaining the availability of the fiber constructions, components, and optical solutions most critical to customer deployments. As the industry evolves, early collaboration is playing a crucial role in supporting successful, on-time deployments. If you have upcoming projects or long-term infrastructure initiatives, our team is available to help evaluate options, protect your supply chain, and support your planning efforts.

Why Proactive Planning is Critical Right Now

High-density components like this Leviton e2XHD module are key to rapidly scaling network capacity.

The internet's foundation is built on glass, and the networking industry is entering a significant new phase in optical fiber demand.

Driven largely by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure, the optical fiber market has shifted from a period of relative stabilization into one defined by accelerating long-term demand. Unlike traditional cloud computing environments, AI data centers require extremely dense fiber networks to support massive volumes of "east-west" traffic — the high-speed communication occurring between thousands of GPUs operating simultaneously within a single environment. This architectural shift is placing increased pressure on the global fiber supply chain, particularly in the production of raw glass preform and high-strand-count fiber cable.

The scale of investment from major technology companies illustrates how quickly the market is evolving. Meta recently announced a multi-year agreement with Corning valued at approximately $6 billion to support optical fiber infrastructure for AI data centers. Microsoft has partnered with Lumen on the deployment of more than 22,000 route miles of fiber as part of Lumen's broader initiative to build AI-focused network infrastructure for hyperscale customers. Nvidia has also expanded its direct investment in optical networking technologies through partnerships designed to integrate advanced optical solutions into AI environments.

At the same time, the U.S. government continues moving forward with the $42 billion Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program aimed at expanding rural broadband infrastructure nationwide. Major manufacturers have publicly stated their commitment to supporting these federally funded deployments while balancing the growing needs of hyperscale AI projects and traditional enterprise demand. It is estimated that this program will consume up to 5% of the national fiber production.

Together, these developments are reshaping the procurement landscape for fiber infrastructure projects across the industry. While the largest technology firms and government-backed initiatives often operate with long-term planning horizons and dedicated supply agreements, many regional providers, contractors, enterprises, and local data centers are beginning to experience longer lead times, evolving product availability, and increased importance around project forecasting and procurement strategy.

For organizations deploying mission-critical network infrastructure, proactive planning is becoming increasingly important and CoreTek is committed to support the Pacific Northwest. Please reach out if you have any questions or would like to discuss an upcoming project.

CoreTek Reps Q1 2026 Technical Update

Handshake-Banner-full-opacity

Welcome to the inaugural Q1 2026 edition of the CoreTek Technical Update. The purpose of this newsletter is to bring value to our partners and deliver new solutions along with insights from the manufacturers that we represent.

In this issue, we explore the modular versatility of the new CPI VersaEdge platform, the unprecedented fiber densities of Leviton's STRATA system, and the immersion-ready capabilities of the TORRENT product family. There are also opportunities for some BICSI CEC's and formal local training. Our goal is to ensure you have the data and local resources required to design resilient, future-ready infrastructure for your clients.

The evolution of edge environments is demanding a shift away from static, low-profile enclosures toward modular platforms capable of supporting high-density compute and storage. As thermal loads increase and physical footprints shrink, traditional wall-mount solutions often fail to meet the rigorous demands of modern distributed IT. To address this, CoreTek is proud to introduce the Chatsworth VersaEdge Wall-Mount Cabinet to our Pacific Northwest partners. This highly modular, UL Listed enclosure is engineered to bridge the gap between basic cabinetry and heavy-duty industrial housings, providing a scalable framework for 3U, 6U, or 9U configurations.

As AI workloads and hyperscale requirements redefine data center architecture, physical layer density and thermal management have become the industry's most critical bottlenecks. Leviton is continuing to deliver new innovations to respond to these bottlenecks.

Strata

Leviton's new STRATA structured cabling platform addresses these challenges by delivering industry-leading densities (up to 3,456 fibers in a single rack unit). This is achieved through MMC connectivity, which offers three times the port density of traditional MPO connectors. To ensure supply chain reliability for these high-count fiber builds, Leviton has secured US Conec certification across five factory sites for the precision manufacturing of MMC assemblies. This provides a robust foundation for mission-critical AI infrastructure.

Torrent

Complementing this densification is the TORRENT line of immersion-ready solutions, which are engineered for the industry's shift toward liquid cooling. Validated per OCP Materials Compatibility standards, TORRENT copper and fiber products maintain signal integrity and material stability even when fully submerged in dielectric cooling fluids. This allows consultants to design aggressive thermal strategies for AI clusters without compromising long-term reliability.

To further support our consultants in developing robust, future-ready infrastructure, we are pleased to highlight our dedicated local resource from Leviton. Having a direct line to a Specification Engineer ensures that your project designs adhere to the latest standards and utilize the most effective solutions.
